William Merritt Chase ( 1st November’ 1849 – 25th October’ 1916): He was an American painter, widely known as a teacher and as an exponent of Impressionism. He is also accountable for establishing the Chase School. Later that would turned into Parsons The New School.
William Merritt Chase was born in Williamsburg (at present called Nineveh), Indiana, to the family of David H. Chase (a local businessman) and Sarah Swain. Mr. David moved the family to Indianapolis in 1861, and employed Chase as a salesman in the family business. Chase was found to show an early interest in art. Thereby studied under local, self-taught artists Jacob Cox and Barton S. Hays as well.
