Frans Hals the Elder ( 1582 – 1666 ): He was born in the Southern Netherlands , a Dutch Golden Age painter. For his wobbly painterly brushwork he is prominent and he helped to introduce this lively style of painting into the era of Dutch art. Hals played an vital role in the evolution of 17th-century group portraiture. Hals was born in 1582 or 1583 (no real record for this), in Antwerp as the son of the cloth merchant Franchois Fransz Hals van Mechelen and his second wife Adriaentje van Geertenryck. Hals went for study under another Karel van Mander, Flemish émigré. His Mannerist persuades, however, is not noticeably observed in his work.
